Creamy Yoghurt Dip w/ Carrot & Cucumber Sticks

July 3, 2016

What do you do when a couple of friends plan to come over at the last minute, and you have no clue what to feed them to keep them occupied while you think of a more elaborate menu? Offer them chips, or fries, or similar junk food? While all of these are certainly the easiest options, they aren’t the healthiest.

I came across this recipe for a simple dip a long long time ago when I visited a friend and her mum served it up with Doritos. Years later, I tried it out with my own twist, and it was just perfect. The best part about this dip is that you need not hang the curd all night – a minimum of an hour is enough since the remaining whey gives it a different creaminess. Moreover, you can add all sorts of ingredients to the final hung curd to pimp it up – you’d be surprised at how amazing yoghurt is as a carrier of flavours.

I love serving this dip with carrot and cucumber sticks, but you can go crazy with radish, baked potato wedges or even Doritos.

  1. Hang the curd for a minimum of one hour. Use a muslin cloth - fill it with the yoghurt and suspend it over a vessel - allowing the whey to drip through. (I usually tie my cloth to a handle or a hook)
  2. Mince the onions and mix it with the chilli powder, chilli flakes, and salt and pepper.
  3. Once the curd is creamy enough scrape it off the muslin, transfer to a bowl and whip it with a fork till it is creamy and smooth.
  4. Add the onion mix to this and combine well.
  5. Adjust the seasoning and serve cold with accompaniments of your choice.
  1. There are hundreds of options that you can play with to pimp up your dip.
  2. A beautiful Roasted Garlic Hung Yoghurt Dip by just mashing up some roasted garlic into the mix.
  3. Add herbs of your choice, finely minced. Or even fresh chillies!
  4. To make it creamier, feel free to put in some cream cheese or mayonnaise and mix it well.
  5. Another option to give the dip an extra kick is some freshly grated lemon zest over the top.
  6. Do not dispose off the whey - it makes for a great tenderiser for meat.
